The author, that is me, the Wettopa, Dirk Paulsen, started very early in my childhood to deal “seriously” with football. It was at the same time a passion for numbers and arithmetic that contributed to it. Logical: I was also a fan of the game and looked at everything that could be seen. Both on the pitch and on television. In addition, I was constantly developing new types of simulations for the Bundesliga (of course, the dearest child, for me too). Whether by Tipp-Kick, Subbuteo (you don’t know another table football game) or playing cards: every means was right to get the most realistic results possible. To do this, I continued to refine the systems so that the tables looked like the real ones.
When I was studying math, I spent the majority of the time in the programming room. It was there (at the beginning of the 80s) that I developed the first football program, which in its final version was even able to calculate prognoses (initial probabilities) for the games. This first version did not satisfy me yet. The results, the calculated probabilities were ok, but I noticed that there was more to be done.
I made my first bet at the European Championship in 1988. I had chosen a good approach, including a mathematical one, and I was also successful, but it was clear to me here too: that can be optimized. My program was ready by the 1990 World Cup. I found the algorithms that I have been working with to this day and that have secured my livelihood for the entire period. Since then, the idea was born: Couldn’t this tool one day be expanded or converted for everyone? That’s how it happened. Today you can also use the tool, based on the unchanged algorithms – which have clearly proven their worth – and the basic idea of calculating the input probabilities (with the help of a simulation) for everything on which odds are offered on the betting market. If the market quota is above the fair quota: you’d have a good bet. The tool makes a few settings by itself, but fine adjustment to optimize the numbers is desirable and helpful, depending on expertise and later experience.
