A few notes on results and table
So, that’s it for this season, for a good three months in total. The last matchday has once again confirmed what was already expressed in a previous statistic and also noted in the recommendations for over/under bets: more goals are being scored than usual. The weather, the sometimes euphoric fans who just want to celebrate, and the season goals already achieved or missed play the decisive role that defensive tactics or defensive work are no longer writ large. Well, one enjoys it, one thus keeps the Bundesliga in good memory over these weeks and months and looks forward to the coming season.
The standings have been consolidated, confirmed or even shaken up in some places. Hertha, for example, has conquered the relegation spot from Cologne. Thanks to Bayern, who took their task of playing football very seriously and not letting any strange feelings arise, and won the game. It was really hard to say which of the two in the elephant race deserved more to get the last chance. Cologne, in any case, also put in a couple of good, unrewarded performances, although not in excessive numbers. Hertha rather had a few missed chances in the first half of the season, the remaining games have been pure torture lately, for all those well-disposed towards Hertha. On the other hand, there is a quality in this team and in the opponents’ team. And Hertha’s was probably lower than that of the teams that were saved, each of which scored in the important moments. But it’s also possible that the pressure of expectations quickly becomes a little greater in the capital than elsewhere. The result is frustrated fans who vent their displeasure – and thus make for even more paralysed legs. In Cologne, however, things are not all that different. In the 60s, they were number 1 in the perpetual table for a long time, and this still seems to be in the memory of many fans: actually, Cologne belongs at the top. This, too, creates (perhaps unreasonable) expectations, which, once disappointed, can quickly lead to the opposite, turning away from the team.
The rules apply quite well in this respect. Top team Dortmund, however, with far overachieved 2 points per game, as did Bayern, who for their part, however, often enough now, at the end of the season, remarked – just like the author here – that their season was actually not that bad, regardless of finals here and there.
Third-placed Schalke, in any case, already with well under 2 points per game – and also had little to do with the championship decision.
In the end, three teams with less than one point per game, two direct relegations and one in the relegation. It is also noticeable that Hertha, with this last victory, lost exactly half of all games and not the other half. Here, the rule was that all these teams are competitive. Hertha now have the straw, which is almost a kind of life raft, if the figures on the betting market are to be believed. Anyway, according to the computer, Hertha are NOT favourites (but not underdogs either) in this pairing. It is quite evenly balanced, so that the formula, in the relegation battle category, may have been wrongly estimated originally, with the two-thirds for the team from the Oberhaus.
By the way, a fourth rule should be mentioned and introduced here, one can also look at this in the future: from a score of 1.5 points per game, one fights for the starting places in Europe. With 34 games, this is always 51 points. The fifth and sixth-placed teams are above this mark, 7th-placed Hannover clearly below it, with 48 points (well, one more win…). However, it wasn’t really foreseeable that two teams from the very top would be in the DFB Cup final, which only put 7th place in sharp focus for Europe.
Of course, it’s rather silly to establish such a “rule” only at the end of the season (to cite it here), since it could simply have been made up out of thin air in view of the finished table picture. You are welcome to check its validity next season, and will be happy to do so here from time to time.
